1. What are the differences with the 1st trimester echo?

At five months, the moment of this echo, your future baby weighs between 500 and 600 g. It is ideal for visualizing all of its organs. We no longer see the entire fetus on the screen, but as

it is still transparent to ultrasound, you can scrutinize the smallest details. The examination lasts on average 20 minutes: this is the minimum time necessary, underlines Dr. Levaillant.

2. Concretely, what is it used for?

This echo is used to observe the morphology and organs of the fetus and ensure that there are no malformations. All organs are combed through! Then the sonographer takes measurements of the fetus. Combined with a clever algorithm, they make it possible to estimate its weight and detect growth retardation. Then the sonographer focuses on the fetal environment. He observes the position of the placenta in relation to the cervix, then checks the insertion of the cord at its two ends: on the fetus side, he checks that there is no hernia; placenta side, that the cord is inserted normally. Then the doctor is interested in the amniotic fluid. Too little or too much can be a sign of maternal or fetal disease. Finally, if the mother-to-be has contractions or has already given birth prematurely, the sonographer measures the cervix.

3. Can we see the baby’s gender?

Not only can you see it, but it’s an integral part of the review. For the professional, the visualization of the morphology of the genitals makes it possible to eliminate a sexual ambiguity.

4. Do you need special preparation?

You will not be asked to fill your bladder! Moreover, with the most recent devices, it has become unnecessary. Also no more recommendations asking you to avoid putting moisturizer on the stomach before the exam. No study has shown that this interferes with the ultrasound path. On the other hand, underlines Dr. Levaillant, for the examination to take place in the best conditions, it is better to have a Zen mother with a flexible uterus and a very mobile baby. A little advice: rest before the exam!

5. Is this ultrasound reimbursed?

Health Insurance covers the second echo at 70% (agreed rate). If you have subscribed to a mutual, this generally reimburses the difference. Also check with your doctor. Given the time spent and the complexity of the exam, many people ask for a small additional fee.
